This workshop is a unique opportunity to understand the challenges faced by minority ethnic communities and how racism impacts mental health. It’s for anyone who wants to learn more about how mental health is experienced by people from these communities. It may be particularly valuable for those who work in mental health services as a way to raise your own awareness of racism and how to be more inclusive when supporting minority ethnic individuals. For people with experience of mental health issues themselves it’s a way for us to come together in solidarity and hear from others’ perspectives.
You will learn how experiences of racism and related issues contribute to mental distress but are often dismissed or poorly understood. The organisers will explore how people from minority ethnic backgrounds experience a lack of representation, and can face rejection, discrimination and exclusion in daily life, and how they face additional barriers when accessing treatment for mental health issues. The workshop is a supportive, informal environment that is open to anyone. The workshop is free to attend but booking is essential.
The workshop is created by the Minority Ethnic Collective Advocacy group at CAPS.
