What is Independent Advocacy

Exhibition team members call out

The exhibition planning group is looking for voluntary exhibition team members for setting up and invigilating the Out Of Sight Out of Mind exhibition, Scotland’s biggest mental health art exhibition.

Being involved in the exhibition set up can be fun, and it can be satisfying to see the exhibition through the different stages to the launch event. Meanwhile invigilating (welcoming visitors when the exhibition is open) can be an interesting way to spend time with the artworks at the exhibition. You’ll also get to meet visitors, exhibitors and the others involved. Both roles offer a unique experience working with others. You might have an interest in art, but you don’t need to have any experience in it.

You will be joining a team of people who have lived experience of mental health issues, many of whom give their time throughout the year to plan the exhibition. The team and the exhibition are supported by staff from CAPS Independent Advocacy. Find out more about each role below. Or get in touch with Irene on email address irene@capsadvocacy.org or mobile number 07881 377 635.

The word 'Revolution' is written below along with the following text; ‘An exhibition of art made by people with experience of mental health issues. 11-29 October 2023, Wed to Sun, 12 - 6pm, Summerhall, Edinburgh, Free’.

Exhibition Team Member – Set-up

The exhibition takes place at Summerhall in Edinburgh, setting up takes place mid week from 27 September until 10 October (the exhibition is from 11-29 October).  You can choose dates that suit you.

The exhibition employs a technical team of people to install the exhibition, and so you don’t need skills to join in the set up.

As part of the set-up team, you will work alongside other team members, staff and exhibitors. Tasks may include helping to move artworks around the building, painting plinths, tidying, putting up labels and helping to make the spaces look great. You will be welcome to join the launch event on the evening of the 10 October. On set up days we provide lunch.

What kind of support/supervision will you receive?

CAPS staff will always be present and can be approached for any assistance or support you may require. You’ll mainly keep in touch with a CAPS Collective Advocacy Worker to arrange when you will join the team and at Summerhall you will be supported by the Arts as Advocacy Manager and other staff.

Personal qualities and requirements?

To join the team you need to identify with having your own experience of mental health issues, although you will not need to share any details about this. You will be able to carry out physical and practical tasks, can follow instructions so that tasks can be done effectively and safely, be willing to work with others, and be willing to ask for help if needed.

Hands on experience in preparing and setting up an exhibition.
